One of the more interesting questions in AI right now is why OpenAI’s ChatGPT has become the default consumer AI product even though several competitors are, at least on paper, technologically comparable or superior in specific areas.

Google Gemini has extraordinary infrastructure advantages, deep integration with Google’s ecosystem, and access to one of the strongest distribution networks in technology history. Perplexity AI Perplexity often produces cleaner citations and more transparent retrieval. Anthropic Claude is widely praised by developers and writers for reasoning depth and writing quality.

And yet ChatGPT remains the product most ordinary users mentally associate with AI itself.

By late 2025, Similarweb data showed ChatGPT attracting roughly 6.3 billion monthly visits, making it the fifth most visited website in the world and the dominant consumer AI interface by a wide margin. The same data reported that ChatGPT attracted 76% of the marketshare when compared to all other generative AI platforms.

At first glance, this seems easy to explain: ChatGPT arrived first.

And first-mover advantage absolutely matters here. The first widely adopted AI interface became the behavioral reference point for millions of users. Entire workflows, habits, expectations, prompting styles, and even internet culture formed around ChatGPT specifically. People now share:

  • prompts,

  • screenshots,

  • workflows,

  • jailbreaks,

  • productivity techniques,

  • and conversational norms
    using ChatGPT as the implicit standard.

That creates real lock-in.

Switching costs are not merely technical anymore. They are behavioral and social. Users have already invested cognitive effort into learning how to interact with one particular AI environment. They have internalized:

  • what tone works,

  • how prompting behaves,

  • how memory feels,

  • what strengths to expect,

  • and how to recover from mistakes.

In other words, users are no longer simply choosing an AI product. They are operating inside a learned cognitive environment.

I think this distinction matters more than many discussions about AI competition currently recognize.

Most analyses still frame the AI market primarily around capability competition:

  • the smartest model,

  • the best benchmarks,

  • the strongest reasoning,

  • the largest context window,

  • the most advanced agents.

Those variables obviously matter. There is absolutely an intelligence floor beneath which no amount of interface elegance can save the product. If ChatGPT were to fall dramatically behind competitors on reasoning quality or factual reliability, users would eventually leave regardless of familiarity. Behavioral trust cannot permanently survive severe technical decay.

Technology history repeatedly demonstrates this. Familiarity creates inertia, but only within certain performance boundaries. Users tolerated Google Search imperfections for years, but if results became catastrophically unusable, habit alone would not preserve dominance indefinitely.

So this is not an argument that intelligence no longer matters.

It is an argument that once systems become sufficiently intelligent, competition shifts toward something else: which environment feels easiest to think through.

Historically, many dominant consumer technologies won not because they exposed maximum capability, but because they reduced the psychological friction surrounding emerging technologies. The original iPhone was not the most feature-rich smartphone at launch. BlackBerry devices often had superior enterprise functionality and physical keyboards. Yet Apple simplified the interaction model so aggressively that smartphones suddenly felt behaviorally intuitive for ordinary users.

The same thing arguably happened with Google Search itself. Earlier search engines often overwhelmed users with portals, directories, widgets, and cluttered interfaces. Google reduced the experience to a nearly empty page with one obvious action. The product lowered the cognitive overhead surrounding information retrieval.

I increasingly think ChatGPT did something similar for AI.

Before ChatGPT, most people encountered advanced AI through fragmented systems:

  • autocomplete,

  • recommendation engines,

  • voice assistants,

  • developer tools,

  • or isolated productivity features.

The systems often felt specialized, inconsistent, or slightly alien. ChatGPT compressed all of this into a single psychologically legible interaction model:
you type something, the system responds conversationally, and the interaction continues naturally.

That simplicity mattered more than many technologists initially realized.

Even now, many competing systems feel cognitively heavier despite excellent technical performance. Gemini often feels connected to Google’s broader ecosystem logic:

  • search,

  • workspace integration,

  • multimodal retrieval,

  • browser-layer functionality,

  • productivity tooling,

  • and operating-system level coordination.

From one perspective, this is an enormous strategic advantage. Google can place Gemini inches away from billions of users by integrating it directly into:

  • Android,

  • Chrome,

  • Gmail,

  • Docs,

  • Search,

  • and Workspace.

Distribution remains one of the most powerful forces in technology markets. People frequently use tools that are merely “good enough” if those tools are frictionlessly available inside existing workflows.

That is precisely why Gemini should not be underestimated.

But proximity and integration do not automatically produce psychological preference. Deep integration can also increase behavioral complexity if users feel they are interacting with:

  • multiple surfaces,

  • fragmented contexts,

  • shifting interfaces,

  • or inconsistent workflow expectations.

Users often prefer environments that feel coherent even if they are theoretically less powerful.

This is where ChatGPT may currently possess an underappreciated advantage.

ChatGPT increasingly functions less like a specialized tool and more like a persistent cognitive environment. Users open it not merely to retrieve information, but to:

  • think through ambiguity,

  • organize ideas,

  • process uncertainty,

  • draft communication,

  • brainstorm,

  • clarify concepts,

  • and refine partially formed thoughts.

Many people now interact with ChatGPT in the same way earlier generations interacted with search engines or note-taking systems:
as a default mental workspace.

That creates a very different category of product relationship.

I think many people underestimate how psychologically important conversational continuity is here. ChatGPT preserves a relatively stable interaction rhythm across use cases. Users do not need to constantly reorient themselves around:

  • different interfaces,

  • retrieval paradigms,

  • workflow structures,

  • or application boundaries.

The system absorbs ambiguity unusually well.

This matters because AI introduces an enormous amount of interpretive instability into ordinary computing. Most users do not fully understand:

  • what these systems can reliably do,

  • when outputs should be trusted,

  • where reliability boundaries exist,

  • or how much verification is required.

That creates low-grade cognitive anxiety underneath many AI interactions.

A 2025 KPMG global survey found that 54% of respondents remained wary about trusting AI systems despite rapid adoption growth, with 70% believing regulation is necessary.

Meanwhile, Reuters documented repeated cases where lawyers submitted fictitious AI-generated legal citations into court filings, including incidents involving sophisticated professionals and elite firms.

The issue is not merely that AI can make mistakes. Humans tolerate imperfect systems constantly. The deeper issue is that AI systems often destabilize confidence calibration itself. Users become uncertain not only about whether outputs are correct, but about when confidence is appropriate.

That is why interface psychology suddenly becomes strategically important.

I think this helps explain why Perplexity, despite being extremely strong in retrieval quality, still feels behaviorally narrower than ChatGPT. Perplexity is often excellent when users already know the category of answer they are seeking. But the interaction still resembles advanced search:

  • query,

  • retrieve,

  • verify,

  • synthesize.

ChatGPT increasingly operates differently. Many people use it even when they do not fully know:

  • what question they are asking,

  • what framework they need,

  • or what final output they want.

The system increasingly functions as a general-purpose ambiguity processor.

That is not primarily a benchmark advantage. It is an environmental advantage.

This is one reason I suspect the long-term AI market may not behave exactly like previous internet markets. The earlier internet era rewarded:

  • aggregation,

  • scale,

  • feature expansion,

  • and distribution dominance.

AI changes the environment because intelligence itself is becoming increasingly abundant. Once that happens, the scarce resource shifts elsewhere:

  • coherence,

  • confidence,

  • continuity,

  • and cognitive ease.

The systems that win may therefore not simply be the systems generating the most intelligence. They may be the systems that reduce the psychological cost of living alongside intelligent systems while remaining technically competitive enough to preserve trust.

That final condition matters enormously.

Comfort without capability eventually collapses.
Capability without cognitive coherence may struggle to become habit.

The companies that successfully combine both may become the true infrastructure layer of the AI era.
